Church School begins with family worship in Divine Liturgy at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings. The students proceed to class following Holy Communion. Classes end at 11:45. Teachers are carefully selected for the task and many have been involved in the program for several years. Students are grouped into classes according to grade level. Two teachers are assigned to each class. An Eastern Orthodox Christian curriculum is used to help our children learn the Faith in Christ. All parents of Church School students must be financial stewards of our parish.

Many volunteers are needed to make our programs successful. Your service to the Church School program is an example to your children and a support to our community.
Please consider volunteering for one or more Church School events, as multiple people are needed for each event to happen. Sign up takes place annually during Church School registration. If you know of someone without school age children willing to help and volunteer, please share. Email churchschool@ssppglenview.org with any questions.

- Project Hope Food Drive (“Brown Bag Sunday”) – During Lent, support the Church School in participating in this Lenten Project to set the example of giving during this season of reflection. As the main point of contact with recipient organization, create list of goods needed, distribute bags to classrooms ahead of time, and coordinate the collecting of bags and distribution to recipient organization.
- St. Nicholas Project – Work with NW Settlement, collect gifts (planning and day-of coordination, nothing offsite).
- Christmas Pageant – This event is vital to bringing our community together to celebrate the season with our wonderful cast of children. We have a coordinator and need enthusiastic supporters to help with costume and set assistants, casting (sign-up/assignment process for the children), and day-of oversight/logistics.
- Oratorical Festival – Our annual Oratorical Festival gives students in 7th-12th grades a chance to delve into their faith and express their learning through speech, essay, songs, chanting or iconography. We will need assistance with promotion, registration, coordination of judges, judges for each category (judges cannot have family members that are participating), coordination of documents to align with Metropolis rules and submission by strict deadlines.
- Substitute Teacher – Serve on our roster of substitute teachers. We always need a bench of substitute teachers to make Sundays go smoothly when one of our usual teachers must miss a week. Subs must complete mandatory youth safety training and background check. Lessons are planned, you generally have a supporting role with the other teacher who is present. A chance to make a meaningful and direct impact.
- Church School Coffee Hour – Assist with set up and clean up, serve during coffee hour, organize Sign Up Genius sign-up for parents to bring food items.
- Sunday Bagels – Each Sunday your children break their communion fast with mini bagels. Help pick up the bagels from their delivery spot, get them to the atrium and be a friendly face passing them out.
- Photographer – Capture our group shots on days of major events, save to a shared file, and coordinate sharing to Office for bulletin and social media. Perks include getting the shots of your children from the front and center!
Church School Behavior Expectations
Every member of the Sts. Peter and Paul Church School team is dedicated to educating all students within a safe, supportive, and welcoming learning environment, with consideration and respect of others. When an individual is misbehaving in the classroom, this disrupts the learning environment for all students. As a first step in preventing inappropriate behavior, parents are urged to review and discuss church school expectations below with their children:
- Respect for everyone in the classroom.
- Eyes on the speaker. Listen with your whole body.
- Only one person speaks at a time.
- Follow directions the first time.
When a student does not follow the expectations outlined above, teachers will give reminders and opportunities to correct their behavior. If the misbehavior continues or becomes a weekly pattern, teachers and/or church school directors will contact their parents. For continued disruptions, students will meet with Father Rick or Father Peter, or parents will be asked to remain in class with their student. At the discretion of teachers and Church School leadership, students may be removed from the classroom.
